I personally saw these 29 destinations and experiences in Sorsogon Province, from surf spots in Gubat to heritage churches, hidden hot springs, Bulusan’s nature trails, and Matnog’s famous pink sand beach.
Sorsogon Province is one of the most underrated destinations in the Bicol Region, known for its rare mix of coastal adventures, nature escapes, and heritage attractions spread across multiple towns. It sits at the southern tip of Luzon, making it a natural gateway between Luzon and the Visayas, especially through Matnog Port. Tourism here is powered by experiences that feel raw and uncrowded, like surfing in Gubat, kayaking and forest trekking in Bulusan Lake, and soaking in natural hot springs in Irosin. One interesting trivia is that Sorsogon is home to one of the country’s most unique beaches, Subic Pink Beach in Matnog, where the sand gets its pinkish tone from crushed red coral fragments mixed with white sand.
What makes Sorsogon even more special is its strong eco-tourism identity. It is one of the best places in the Philippines to spot whale sharks naturally in the wild, particularly in Donsol, which is internationally recognized as a responsible interaction site because of its strict guidelines. The province is also shaped by volcanic and geothermal activity, which is why areas like Irosin have naturally heated springs and fertile landscapes. For travelers who love culture, Sorsogon’s old churches, heritage houses, and ruins in towns like Barcelona and Juban give a glimpse of its Spanish-era history. Despite having all these attractions, Sorsogon still feels refreshingly local, making it ideal for travelers who want authentic Bicol experiences without the heavy crowds of more commercialized destinations.
29 Experiences in Sorsogon I Recommend
1. Residencia de Hamor Full View (Bacon)

This is one of those places in Sorsogon that instantly makes you feel like you’re on a private coastal escape. I stayed here for the view, and yes, the “Full View” name is accurate if you still wish to see Mt. Mayon even while in Sorsogon. The sea looks wide and endless, especially early morning.
What I liked most was how peaceful it felt. It’s the type of resort you’d book if you want quiet rest after touring Sorsogon. The staff also felt attentive, and the vibe was luxuriously polished but still very Bicolano-friendly.
2. Siama Surf (Gubat)

Siama Surf is a solid pick if you’re looking for a chill and curated resort experience in Sorsogon. It has its own cafe and restaurant with private swimming pool fronting the deluxe rooms, hence, a strategic decision if you choose to book an overnight stay here.
3. St. Lawrence the Deacon Parish Church (Prieto Diaz)

This church gave me that classic old-town Bicol vibe. The structure feels grounded and historic, and stepping inside instantly slows you down. It’s worth visiting even if you’re not religious, because it reflects the community’s roots.
4. Mangrove Forest and Sabang Beach Park (Prieto Diaz)

Visiting the Prieto Diaz Mangrove Eco Park should be a must on your list of travel destinations while in Sorsogon. Apart from winning a 30 million cash prize from BFAR contest during 2022, the fishermen cum Eco Guides are the masters of this realm where they are able to discuss the co-existence of 3 importance ecosystems – the Mangroves, the Corals and the Seagrass. These conditions make the coastal area of Prieto Diaz one of the best spawning areas for marine life.

Sabang Beach Park is the kind of place locals hang out in the afternoon. The public park features shaded seats for your comfort against the sun. It has direct access to the sprawling Mangrove Forest. It’s not a “fancy beach destination,” but it’s relaxing and real. If you want a quick seaside break while driving through Sorsogon, this is a practical stop.
5. Consan’s Beach Resort (Prieto Diaz)

Consan’s Beach Resort feels like a straightforward, budget-friendly beach stay. I went here expecting basic amenities, and that’s exactly what it delivered. The beach view is the main highlight. It’s also a good option if you’re traveling with barkada and just want a clean place to sleep near the water. Best visit during the afternoon and sunset hours.
6. Casiguran People’s Park

This park is simple but surprisingly nice as a quick rest stop. I visited during the golden hour, and it felt like a good “breather” spot after long drives. It is located near the Casiguran Port and the new 16,000 roses best visited at night for the grand illumination effect. There is a grand arch gate way to shade you and as a beautiful backdrop or framing of the large image of the Virgin Mary.
7. Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish Church (Casiguran)

This church is another reminder that Sorsogon is deeply rooted in heritage. I visited it after checking out Casiguran P eople’s Park, and it’s a smooth walking or short tricycle ride away. The church feels peaceful, and the surrounding area gives that old-town charm. If you like visiting churches as part of your travel documentation, this is a good one.
8. Juban Heritage Houses

Juban’s heritage houses were one of the most underrated stops for me. I didn’t expect much, but when you see these old structures lined along the street, you realize how rich Sorsogon’s history is. I took this photo last 2013 as my official first-ever solo backpacking.
9. New Tourism Hub and Public Road Access (Gubat)

This is one of the smartest improvements I’ve seen in a small-town tourism area. The hub makes travel easier, especially for visitors who don’t know where to start in Gubat. The tourist hub features an open hall with comfort rooms. The road access also feature adobe-style street stretching from the highway until branching both sides providing longer access to Gubat’s surfing beach.
10. Surfing Beach in the Town of Gubat

Gubat is honestly one of the recommended surfing areas in Bicol region that still feels lowkey. I visited the surfing beach area and immediately saw why surfers keep coming back. The beach features sandy shores which is friendly for beginners. The coastline is wide, the breeze is strong, and the vibe feels raw and adventurous. Even if you don’t surf, the scenery alone makes the trip worth it. It faces the Pacific Ocean hence, perfect surfing swells. Best months for surfing are from October to May.
11. San Benon Hot Spring (Irosin)

San Benon Hot Spring in Irosin was one of my favorite and top relaxation stops in Sorsogon. After long road travel from Pampanga, soaking here feels like hitting a reset button. My lower back was so happy.
The water is naturally warm specially at the higher tiers. This is one of those places you’ll appreciate even more if you’ve been hiking or walking around Bulusan Lake. Best to visit during late afternoons and help you relax and prepare before you hit the sack.
12. St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church (Irosin)

This church in Irosin is located on an elevated area with two connecting stairways leading to the church frontyard. Gladly, the sky was clear and this is one of the best vantage points in Irosin to enjoy the view Mt. Bulusan. The location is accessible, and it’s a good stop if you want a cultural side trip before heading back to nature spots. Photo taken during my 2013 Solo Backpacking.
13. Stand Up Paddle at Dancalan Bay (Bulusan)

Dancalan Bay surprised me. It’s not just a “viewing spot” in the town of Bulusan. It’s a free public beach area experience, especially if you try stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking here. I saw a standup paddler here and took some aerial shots using DJI Neo 2. The water is calmer compared to its deeper and further regions where I can see huge waves crashing from afar, making it beginner-friendly. If you’re searching “where to do paddleboarding in Sorsogon,” this is one of the easiest recommendations.
14. New Eco-Tourism Center (Bulusan)

The Bulusan Eco-Tourism Center is was recently inaugurated in the presence of different Tourism Regional Directors and officials from Biri of Northern Samar. It has clean restrooms for tourists and direct access to Dancalan Beach.
15. Hiking Trail in Bulusan Lake

This trail is perfect if you want a nature walk that doesn’t feel too extreme. I did the hike expecting just trees and shade, but it’s more scenic than I expected. You’ll hear birds, see thick greenery, and feel the air get cooler. It’s a refreshing break if you’ve been doing beach trips for days. The trail features an established bricked path and stairs leading to the Hanging Bridge. Be careful when you tread the trail since it is carved from steep slopes.
16. Hanging Bridge in Bulusan Lake

The hanging bridge was one of those “simple but fun” moments. It adds character to the Bulusan Lake experience, and it’s a good photo spot too.
Walking across it felt slightly thrilling, especially if you’re scared of heights. It’s safe, but still gives you that little adrenaline.
17. Stand Up and Kayaking at Bulusan Lake

If you want the full Bulusan Lake experience, don’t just take photos. Try kayaking. I did saw lots of visitors kayaking, and it gave me a different view of the lake, quieter and more immersive.
The water looks darker and deeper up close, and the surrounding forest makes it feel dramatic, especially when it gets foggy. This is one of the strongest “worth your money” activities in Sorsogon.
18. Barcelona Ruins Park

Barcelona Ruins Park is one of the most iconic historical spots in Sorsogon. Seeing the old stone ruin structure in person feels different from photos. It’s quiet, slightly haunting I can say, but beautiful. I spent time here taking photos and recording aerials and just imagining the history behind it. It’s a must-stop if you like heritage landmarks.
19. St. Joseph Parish Church (Barcelona)

Right near the ruins, this church makes Barcelona feel like a complete heritage stop. The architecture feels old but well-preserved. The church interior is a different story – lots of paintings inside. I visited after exploring the ruins, and it was a good flow. If you want a meaningful “history + culture” day, Barcelona delivers.
20. Pepita Park (Sorsogon City)

Pepita Park is one of those spots you visit for the view and end up staying longer than expected. It’s relaxing, breezy, and features the iconic blue crab. It is one of the first stop you can visit once you arrive in Sorsogon City coming from the northern Bicol provinces. It also features a park with direct access to Sorsogon Bay.
Though, I recommend going here late afternoon when the breeze gets cooler. The lighting makes the scenery look softer, and it feels like a good pause before dinner in the city.
21. Sorsogon Sports Arena (Sorsogon City)

This isn’t a typical tourist attraction, but it’s still part of the city experience. I visited because it’s a landmark, and it gives you a feel of how active the local community is. It is a horseshoe-shaped complex with inspirations from Italy’s iconic Colosseum. If you’re exploring Sorsogon City, it’s an easy stop to add, especially if you’re passing by anyway. Best time, just when the golden hour rays hit the columns.
22. Museo Sorsogon

Museo Sorsogon is a must if you want context. Beaches and lakes are fun, but museums explain why the province feels so distinctly beautiful and enthralling. When I visited, it gave me a better appreciation of Sorsogon’s identity, history, heritage and local culture. If you’re traveling with kids or students, this is a strong educational stop. Must try the mirrored sections on the second floor. Want to know why? You have to visit there to know the answer.
23. Sorsogon Capitol Building

The Capitol Building is a classic city landmark. I visited mainly for documentation and photos, and it’s a nice stop if you’re doing a walking tour of Sorsogon City. It also helps you orient yourself. Nearby, you’ll find food spots and transport options, so it’s practical.
24. Sorsogon Cultural Center for the Arts

This place reflects the creative side of the province. When I visited, it felt like a reminder that Sorsogon isn’t only about nature. There’s also performance, arts, and local pride here. One of its iconic structures is the gigantic Pili art installation.
25. Juag Lagoon (Matnog)

Juag Lagoon is one of Matnog’s biggest highlights. This is where you can see marine life up close, and it’s one of the most family-friendly nature stops in Sorsogon. When I visited this March, the water was clear, and the experience felt educational. It’s a good alternative if you want ocean-related activities without full-on island hopping. Follow this rule strictly by the way, no sunscreens before you swim at the lagoon. According to our boatmen, month of April proves the clearest water season.
26. Subic Pink Beach (Matnog)

Yes, it’s real. Subic Pink Beach is one of the most photographed destinations in Sorsogon, and seeing the pinkish sand in person feels surreal. There are two beaches at the same island – so don’t be confused. We moored and swam at Subic Laki. It’s genuinely beautiful and this photo is raw – no filter needed. Best time to go is when the sun is out, because that’s when the sand color shows more. The pink portion is where the waves crash as more crushed red corals gets sedimented in action.
27. Calintaan Cave (Matnog)

You should visit Calintaan Cave too, along with your pink beach adventure in Matnog. You’ll also pass by lots of interesting rock formations and other cave orifices. You can swim towards the cave entrance and enjoy this unique experience too.
28. Matnog Municipal Hall Grounds

This sounds like a simple and unusual stop, but it’s actually useful for travelers. I visited the area while moving around Matnog, and it’s a good point for orientation. We had a brief courtesy call to the town mayor, Hon. Bobet Rodrigueza, whose wife he said has Kapampangan roots. The spacious frontyard gives you ample space to have photo with their domed Municipal Hall.
29. St. Peter and Paul Cathedral

This is one of the beautiful structural icons in Sorsogon due to its beautiful facade and unique church dome. Its front yard is also a good vantage point to see the Sorsogon Bay. Photo taken during my 2013 Solo Backpacking Trip in Sorsogon.
How to Get to Sorsogon (Travel Guide)
Option 1: Land Travel from Metro Manila (Bus or Car)
Take a bus bound for Sorsogon City or Matnog. Travel time is usually 12 to 15 hours, depending on stops and traffic. Most buses pass through Naga, Legazpi, and Daraga. Bus companies that ply Sorsogon routes are DLTB, Alps, Bicol Isarog, Alps and Arandia. So far, I have tried DLTB and Bicol Isarog’s sleeper bus.
If driving, plan fuel stops in Batangas, Quezon, Camarines Sur or Albay. Expect long but scenic highway views.
Best for: budget travelers and road trip groups
Option 2: NAIA to Bicol International Airport (Daraga) then Land Travel to Sorsogon
Fly from NAIA to Bicol International Airport in Daraga, Albay via Cebu Pacific Air and Philippine Airlines. From there, ride a van or bus going to Sorsogon City.
Land travel from Daraga to Sorsogon is around 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic.
Best for: quick weekend trips and travelers avoiding long bus rides
Option 3: Clark (CRK) to Naga Airport then Land Travel to Sorsogon

If you’re coming from Central Luzon and Northern Luzon, Clark flights going to Naga (via Naga Airport) can save time via Cebu Pacific Air.
From Naga City, take a bus or van going to Sorsogon City. Travel time is around 3 to 4 hours.
Best for: North and Central Luzon travelers
Option 4: Flight from Cebu or Iloilo to Bicol International Airport then Land Travel to Sorsogon
If you’re from Visayas, book flights from Cebu or Iloilo to Bicol International Airport via Cebu Pacific Air.
From the airport, ride to Legazpi terminal or directly take a van/bus to Sorsogon.
Best for: quick Visayas-to-Bicol trips
Option 5: Allen Port to Matnog Port (Eastern Visayas Route)
If you’re coming from Samar or nearby provinces, the Allen Port to Matnog Port route is the fastest connection.
The ferry ride is usually 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on sea conditions. After arriving in Matnog, you can take a bus or van to Sorsogon City or Bulusan.
Best for: Eastern Visayas travelers doing a Bicol loop
Practical Checklist Before Visiting Sorsogon
Bring cash. Some areas have limited ATMs.
Download offline maps. Signal drops in some nature spots.
Wear aqua shoes. Many beach areas have rocks or coral fragments.
Pack light rain gear. Weather changes fast in Bicol.
Start early. Long drives between towns can eat your day.
Why Sorsogon Is Worth the Trip
Sorsogon feels like a province that hasn’t been over-commercialized yet. It has beaches, history, and nature that still feel authentic. It’s also one of the easiest provinces to explore because towns like Gubat, Bulusan, Irosin, and Matnog connect smoothly.
If you want a Bicol trip that feels less crowded than Legazpi but still packed with experiences, Sorsogon is a smart choice.
