Jubilee Year 2025 Pilgrimage Guide: Nueva Ecija

As the Catholic Church celebrates the 2025 Jubilee Year with the theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” the Department of Tourism Central Luzon Office has unveiled a faith-based tourism circuit that invites devotees and travelers alike to embark on a spiritual journey through seven significant churches under the Diocese of Cabanatuan. This pilgrimage not only offers a chance for spiritual renewal but also a deeper appreciation of the cultural and historical tapestry that these sacred sites represent. Note that these are 7 out of 9 listed Pilgrimage Churches under the Diocese of Cabanatuan.

Located in the quiet town of Aliaga, the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of St. John the Baptist stands as the town’s symbol of faith and tradition. Unique among churches, its crucifix bears inscriptions in Aramaic, Greek, and Latin—a rare feature shared only with the Manila Cathedral. This shrine is also renowned for the annual “Taong Putik” Festival, where devotees cover themselves in mud and banana leaves, emulating St. John the Baptist’s humility and penance. Many believe in the miraculous healing powers associated with the shrine, drawing pilgrims seeking spiritual and physical solace.

A short journey from Bibiclat leads to the Diocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora de las Saleras. This church houses a precious relic—a fragment of the veil of the Virgin Mary, authenticated by the Vatican and brought from Cebu to Aliaga. The image of the Virgin, originally crafted from ivory, suffered theft in the 1970s, leaving only the hands as remnants of the original statue. Despite this, the shrine remains a place of deep Marian devotion, symbolizing resilience and unwavering faith.

In the town of San Antonio stands the Diocesan Shrine of St. Anthony Abbot, the patron saint invoked for health and longevity. Pilgrims visit this shrine seeking blessings for physical well-being and protection against diseases. The church’s serene ambiance offers a space for reflection and prayer, reinforcing the community’s collective hope for healing and vitality

Established as a parish in 1800s, the Diocesan Shrine in Jaen is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and St. Augustine. This church has been a cornerstone of faith in the region, witnessing generations of devotees. Its historical significance and architectural beauty, noting its modern style of altar, make it a vital stop in the Jubilee pilgrimage, offering insights into the enduring Catholic heritage of Nueva Ecija.

Founded in 1500s, this parish church in Gapan City is the oldest and largest colonial church in Nueva Ecija. In 2024, Pope Francis elevated it to the status of Minor Basilica, recognizing its historical and spiritual significance. The church enshrines the image of La Virgen Divina Pastora, which received canonical coronation in April of 1964. This beautiful basilica stands as clear evidence of centuries of devotion. It is also a focal point for Marian pilgrimages in the region.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish (Peñaranda, Nueva Ecija)

Established in 1853, the St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Peñaranda showcases Byzantine architectural influences. The church has been a spiritual haven for the community, celebrating its patronal feast every October 4th. Its historical marker, unveiled in 1951, underscores its cultural and religious importance. The parish’s enduring presence reflects the deep-rooted Franciscan spirituality that continues to inspire the faithful.

The St. Nicholas of Tolentine Cathedral, established in 1700, serves as the ecclesiastical seat of the Diocese of Cabanatuan. This cathedral holds historical significance as the site where General Antonio Luna was assassinated in 1899, a pivotal event in Philippine history. The cathedral’s neoclassical architecture and its role in both religious and national narratives make it a profound symbol of faith and patriotism.

The Remaining Jubilee Churches I have not set foot in yet are:

  • Parish Church of St. Isidore The Worker, Talavera, Nueva Ecija
  • Parish Church of St. Francis of Assisi, Bongabon, Nueva Ecija

More Than Just a Pilgrimage

This was more than a sightseeing trip. It was a journey into the soul of Central Luzon—where endless stories of faith, history, and heritage begin. Where miraculous relics sit quietly in simple altars, and where communities continue to believe against all odds and against modernization.

If you’re looking for a meaningful experience—something beyond the usual tourist trail—consider this pilgrimage route in Nueva Ecija. Walk through its doors. Whisper your prayers. Stamp your passport. And come home with more than memories—come home with hope.

Travel Tips:

  • Ask about the “Diocesan Pilgrim Passport” before your visit!
  • Wear light, respectful clothing. Most churches are open-air and welcoming.
  • Bring a journal or notepad. You’ll want to write things down.
  • Best visited with a local guide or church liaison to understand the deeper histories.
