There are written excerpts that this picturesque waterfalls is already being visited even during the Spanish colonial years. This certainly speaks of the grandeur that the waterfalls truly beholds – beckoning visitors through the centuries.

Being one of the destinations that truly captivates every guest through its splendid views and adventurous passages, it is no wonder that it is part of the CALABARZON Leg of the Philippine Experience – a flagship program of the Department of Tourism. The project aims to create travel and tourism caravans highlighting the cultural, culinary, religious and historical value of each destinations. The Tourism Caravan project also aims to strengthen to Filipino branding and identity.

Mother Nature’s Masterpiece

Pagsanjan Falls, also known as Cavinti Falls, is a famed waterfall riverpark with its main cascade located in the town of Cavinti, approximately 90 kilometers southeast of Manila. Lion’s share of tourists tackles the famous entry route via the town of Pagsanjan, Laguna. The famous Pagsanjan route would allow the guests to marvel the serene yet picturesque river community of Pagsanjan. From your canoe ride, you will pass by rows of private dwellings, river resorts and restaurant, many of which offer panoramic views of the river through their respective balconies. 

It stands as a testament to the raw power and beauty of nature, drawing visitors from all over the world to witness its grandeur.

The Pagsanjan Falls Experience

The journey to Pagsanjan Falls is an adventure in itself. Traveling on a traditional Filipino canoe called a “banca,” you will navigate the placid sections of the Pagsanjan River, passing through towering and stunning limestone cliffs, verdant rainforests, and serene waters. The skilled boatmen expertly maneuver the canoe upstream through the river’s twists and turns, providing you with an exhilarating and adrenaline filled ride – this is the “shooting the rapids”. Apart from these adventures through the river, there are lengthy passages that are calm and serene. You would pass by vertical streams of clear and cool waters, fern covered rocky cliffs and a cinematic view of the forest canopy above. The soothing of sound of paddling would be sometimes be joined with cacophony of distant coos and shrills. 

Through the years and the passage of different developments, the famed stretch of rapids now has seemingly nautical lanes fit for the wooden canoes to pass through. There are portions of the river where there are two or three lane passageway specifically designed for the boatmen to push the canoe against the stream. This is actually where the adventure is, and on the contrary, the challenge of the boatmen to bring against the rapids 2 to 3 guests of every size and weight. You would also notice thick steel pipes strategically place against the rocks where each and every canoe shall be pushed, no matter what. In every crevice or upstream challenge, you would definitely feel the obstacles from the wooden seat below you. As per our boatman, there are about 16 rapids to pass against if hailing from the usual Pagsanjan jump-off point. The entire stretch of the route would cost about an hour or more one way upstream, and this also depends on the nautical traffic ahead of you. 

The climax of the river journey is, of course, the breathtaking Pagsanjan Falls. As you approach the falls, the sound of the cascading water grows louder, building anticipation.

Get to experience the power of the cascade. At the Pagsanjan Falls, there are boatmen who would expertly guide the bamboo raft beneath the falls, allowing you to experience the sheer power of the rushing water. You will be drenched by the cool spray and the sheer power of Mother Nature, and the thrill is definitely undeniable. 

The Talahib Falls Experience

Almost halfway through the river course, a quick stopover is the Talahib Waterfalls, also known as the”First Falls”. This is where boatmen would catch a quick breath and guests marvel at another towering yet gentle cascade of the Talahib Falls. In this spot, there are huts and seats where tourists can lounge and enjoy snacks that could be available, especially during peak days. One should tackle a short rocky route to enjoy the full view of the waterfalls.

Pagsanjan Falls Entrance Fee

The Usual Day Tour Fee per head is Php1,350 if hailing via Aria Resort in Pagsanjan. That includes fees for the boat and entrance fee. Because of the intense labor done by the boatmen to get you shooting through the rapids, it is recommended to tip them handsomely. Your gift would help them get across to make ends meet.

Recommended Pagsanjan-Based Accommodations

I recommend either Casa del Rio or Pagsanjan Aria Resort. The Casa Del Rio or the Pagsanjan Aria Resort. Both have direct river access and shower amenities after the Pagsanjan sojourn.

Getting There via Pagsanjan

To reach Pagsanjan Falls, travelers typically start their journey from Manila. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get there:

1. From Manila, take a bus bound for Sta. Cruz, Laguna. These buses can be found in various terminals, such as Buendia or Cubao.
2. Alight at the town of Pagsanjan. The bus ride takes approximately 2-3 hours, depending on traffic conditions.
3. Once in Pagsanjan, head to the Pagsanjan Tourism Center. This is where you can arrange for a boat ride to the falls.
4. Engage a local boatman. You will be guided through a scenic river tour that includes navigating rapids and lush greenery before reaching the falls.

What to Bring

• Swimwear: It’s a good idea to wear your swimwear under your clothes to fully enjoy the falls.
• Waterproof Bag: To protect your belongings from getting wet during the boat ride.
• Camera: Capture the awe-inspiring beauty of the falls and the surrounding landscape.
• Water Shoes or Aqua Socks: These will come in handy when navigating slippery rocks.
• Sunscreen: Protect your delicate barrier from the sun as you speed through the waters of the river towards the main cascade of Pagsanjan Falls.

Tips for Your Visit

• Safety First: Listen carefully to your boatmen’s instructions and wear a life vest for added safety during the boat ride.
• Respect the Environment: Take your trash with you and avoid littering. Leave no trace of your visit.
• Guided Tours: While it’s possible to explore Pagsanjan Falls independently, hiring an experienced boatman is recommended for a safe and enjoyable experience.
• Weekdays vs. Weekends: If possible, plan your visit on a weekday to avoid crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience.
• Always keep your hands inside the canoe: While shooting the rapids, even if it is for a photo opportunity, it is wise to keep your hands inside the canoe. This is for two major reasons: First and foremost is for your safety to avoid hitting the rocks which are actually only a few inches away from you, and to maintain your center of gravity so the boatmen can easily and safely navigate you through the rapids.
• Don’t remove your lifejacket and helmet while at the cascade: Even if it is for a photo opportunity, it is wise not to remove your safety gear. Since of the slippery nature of the cavern, you will never when an accident will occur.
• Rainy Season: Be mindful of the weather. The water levels can rise during the rainy season, affecting the intensity and safety of the boat ride. Keep watch of the local climate.

Pagsanjan Falls is more than just a waterfall river park; it is a natural wonder that offers a thrilling adventure and a chance to connect with the beauty of the Philippines’ poster natural landscapes. Being one of the destinations mostly mentioned through our Civic or Social Studies textbooks from elementary to high school – it is recommended to experience the falls yourself and compare the feeling.
