Beyond the Beaches of Batangas: 8 Destinations for an Unforgettable Food and Heritage Tour

Looking for unique things to do in Batangas? Explore eight destinations across Batangas First Congressional District, where heritage churches, traditional Batangueño delicacies, local craftsmanship, community experiences, and coastal adventures offer a different way to experience the province.

Batangas is often associated with beautiful beaches, mountain retreats, diving destinations, and its famous Kapeng Barako. But if you think you have already experienced everything this province has to offer, it is time to take a different route.

Beyond its popular resorts and familiar tourist attractions, Batangas holds a wealth of cultural traditions, family-run food businesses, historic landmarks, and community experiences waiting to be explored.

One of the best ways to experience this side of the province is through the Batangas First Congressional District Food and Heritage Tour, an experiential tourism circuit organized by the Department of Tourism – CALABARZON Office.

Taking you through eight destinations across towns of Taal, Lemery Balayan, Calatagan, Lian, Nasugbu, Tuy and City of Calaca, the circuit introduces you to the people, flavours, and traditions that somehow shaped Batangas’ cultural and gastronomical identity.

You will learn how traditional delicacies are made, meet artisans preserving generations-old crafts, explore local markets, experience community-based tourism, and enjoy coastal adventures that offer a refreshing change from the usual Batangas getaway.

More importantly, you will meet the living icons who make these experiences possible.

1. Taal: Experience Batangas Heritage, Traditional Crafts, and Local Delicacies

Your Batangas food and heritage adventure should begin in Taal, a historic municipality known for its well-preserved heritage architecture, religious landmarks, traditional embroidery, and local delicacies.

Minor Basilica and Parish of St. Martin of Tours, Taal Heritage Village, Batangas

One of your first stops is the magnificent Minor Basilica and Parish of St. Martin of Tours. Its imposing architecture and historical significance make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in Taal Heritage Village. Take your time admiring its grand structure and appreciate the religious heritage that continues to shape the town.

Visitors can see the actual letters and handwritten documents during the Spanish invasion

Continue your historical exploration at the Marcela Agoncillo Museum, dedicated to the woman who helped sew the first Philippine flag. It is an opportunity to learn about an important chapter in Philippine history while appreciating Taal’s contribution to the country’s national heritage.

But Taal’s cultural experiences extend beyond its historic landmarks.

Kap. Christian and their heirloom recipe of panutsa

On special request, you get to experience traditional panutsa-making with Barangay Captain Christian Cuarto, who inherited the recipe from his great-grandparents. Watching the preparation of this beloved peanut confection gives you an appreciation of how family recipes preserve local food traditions across generations.

What to eat and experience at Taal Town

  • Tapang Taal: Visit the many local meat specialities with a salty flavour profile. Pair it with a generous serving of sinangag, vinegar dip and egg for a satisfying Filipino breakfast. They also have their version of longganisa.

  • Taal Empanada: Visit Ma’am Rowena’s house and learn how to prepare this local favourite through a hands-on empanada-making experience. This requires prior coordination.

Witness a cultural treasure in action

Try hand-embroidering your name at Taal with the community
  • Burdang Taal: Meet local embroiderers from different generations and learn about the intricate hand embroidery techniques that make Taal famous.

One particularly memorable encounter is meeting 20-year-old Ms. Jheelie, who already knows more than four hand embroidery techniques. Her skills represent the younger generation carrying forward Taal’s traditional embroidery heritage.

From historic churches to family recipes and intricate hand embroidery, Taal gives you a meaningful introduction to the cultural identity of Batangas.

2. Lemery: Enjoy a Relaxing Beachfront Escape

Shores of Lemery during sunrise

After a day filled with heritage exploration and food experiences, Lemery offers a welcome opportunity to slow down.

Our stop at Villa MJ Maristela Resort gave us time to enjoy the coastal setting and appreciate the quieter side of Batangas tourism.

One of the highlights was watching the sunrise by the beach. It was a peaceful start to the morning, giving you a chance to recharge before continuing the food and heritage circuit.

If you are planning a Batangas road trip, Lemery also makes a good reminder to leave some room in your itinerary for beachfront relaxation.

3. City of Calaca: Discover Local Food Traditions and Community Enterprises

The next destination on your Batangas itinerary is Calaca, where religious heritage and traditional food preparation take centre stage.

Visit the Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel and admire its architectural beauty. Beyond the church itself, you also get to meet Lola Dada, a candle seller who has been serving churchgoers for decades.

Her story offers a glimpse into the people who have become part of the community’s everyday religious traditions.

Learn the art of making atchara in Calaca

At Calaca City Hall, the experience shifts to local gastronomy.

The Officers of NASAKA (Nagkakaisahang Samahan ng Kababaihan sa Quisumbing) who demonstrated atchara making

You get to participate in an atchara-making session with the women leaders of Nagkakaisang Samahan ng Kababaihan ng Quisumbing.

Atchara, the familiar Filipino pickled papaya condiment, is a staple in many Filipino households. But here, you get to learn something particularly interesting: the distinction between dalagang atchara and binatang atchara.

It is a fascinating way to appreciate the knowledge and traditions behind an everyday Filipino food product.

Try authentic Batangas lomi at Lomihan sa Madalunot

No food trip in Batangas would be complete without enjoying a hearty bowl of lomi.

My favorite topping is the crispy fried sliver of kikiam

At Lomihan sa Madalunot, you get to witness how its signature lomi and pancit guisado are prepared. The business began in 2002 and continues to serve these comforting Filipino favourites.

Calaca offers a combination of heritage, community enterprise, and authentic local food experiences worth adding to your Batangas itinerary.

4. Balayan: Taste Traditional Batangas Delicacies and Family Recipes

If you love discovering regional Filipino food, Balayan is a destination you should not skip.

This municipality offers an interesting look at how family-run food businesses preserve traditional recipes while responding to changing consumer tastes.

Taste the famous Lydia’s Special Tamales

Our first stop was Lydia’s Special Tamales, where we met the third-generation owner who continues the family’s tamales-making tradition.

With demand for the delicacy returning, the business represents how traditional Filipino food can find renewed appreciation among younger consumers and returning customers.

It is also a reminder that preserving culinary heritage requires people willing to continue the work started by previous generations.

Visit the Panaligan Bagoong and Patis Factory

Another interesting stop is Panaligan Bagoong, a family enterprise owned by Ms. Virginia Panaligan.

Ms. Virginia with their top products – the patis and bagoong

Operating for 40 years, the factory gave us a firsthand look at the production of bagoong and patis, two ingredients deeply embedded in Filipino cuisine.

The characteristic bold and funky aroma is unmistakable. But for Filipinos, it is also the familiar scent of ingredients that add depth and savoury flavour to countless local dishes.

Seeing the production process gives you a greater appreciation of the work involved in making these everyday kitchen staples.

For food lovers, Balayan is an opportunity to go beyond simply tasting local delicacies. You get to meet the people behind the products and learn the stories that have kept their businesses operating through generations.

5. Calatagan: Experience Mangrove Adventures and Community-Based Tourism

Ready for something different? Calatagan introduces an exciting outdoor experience that combines coastal tourism, local livelihood, and environmental appreciation.

At SMP Campsite, home of the Samahan ng Mangingisda ng Palo Bandera in Barangay Sta. Ana, you get to experience a community-led tourism initiative surrounded by mangrove trees and located just a few metres from the beach.

Enjoy a boodle fight by the mangroves

Your experience begins with a boodle fight lunch, where you share a communal Filipino meal in a beautiful coastal setting.

It is an enjoyable way to appreciate local hospitality while learning about the community behind the tourism activities.

Try mollusc fishing, crab catching, and kayaking

The adventure continues with activities that let you experience the coastal environment firsthand.

sunset kayaking at SMP Campsite Calatagan is so epic

You get to try mollusc fishing and catch crabs using the group’s new tourist-friendly paddle boats. If you prefer exploring the mangroves at a slower pace, kayaking is another activity to try.

These experiences offer a glimpse into the traditional activities and livelihoods of local fishing communities while giving visitors a chance to appreciate the natural environment.

The best part? The afternoon ends with a beautiful sunset as you depart the site.

After a full day of coastal adventures, we checked in at Matabungkay Beach Hotel, where a relaxing night swim provided the perfect ending to the day.

Calatagan is a reminder that some of the most rewarding things to do in Batangas involve getting closer to nature and spending time with the communities that call it home.

6. Lian: Discover Traditional Blacksmithing and Iconic Batangas Bakes

Lian offers another interesting chapter in the Batangas food and heritage circuit, this time highlighting traditional craftsmanship and local baked delicacies.

Experience traditional blacksmithing at “Pandayan” or Blacksmith

See the men in action as they manually shape each blade

One of the most distinctive experiences was visiting Pandayan. It is so rare nowadays to see manual foundries.

Here, you get a firsthand look at how blacksmiths work with metal, shaping and transforming it through traditional techniques.

Watching the process gives you a better appreciation of a craft that requires patience, physical skill, and years of experience. It is an experience that takes you beyond the usual tourist activities and introduces you to a traditional livelihood that deserves recognition. Extra care is required as they work with high temperatures.

Visit Ester’s Special Bibingka

See how these giant bibingka and bibingkoy are made

From metalworking, you move on to something sweeter at Ester’s Special Bibingka.

You get to tour the factory and learn about the preparation of its iconic bibingka and bibingkoy. Of course, the experience would not be complete without tasting these local favourites.

See the traditional pugon oven at Magahis Bakery

If only the walls of Magahis Bakery tell the stories

Another must-visit is Magahis Bakery, an iconic establishment known for its old pugon oven.

The traditional oven is an interesting part of the bakery’s identity, offering a glimpse into traditional baking practices. You also get to taste its well-loved jacomina biscuits and meringue, making this another enjoyable stop for food enthusiasts. Apart from pastries and bread, they use the old pugon in cooking crispy pata.

Lian proves that Batangas heritage is not confined to old churches and ancestral structures. It also lives in traditional workshops, innovative but traditional bakeries, and family businesses that continue to serve their communities.

7. Nasugbu: Explore the Local Market and Experience Batangas Gastronomy

Nasugbu is often associated with beautiful beaches, coastal resorts, and weekend getaways. But there is another reason to visit this municipality: its local food culture.

The Nasugbu Gastronomy Experiential Tour takes you closer to the everyday culinary traditions of the community.

The viral and trending ensaymada of Samuelito’s

Your first stop is Samuelito’s Baked Goods, where you learn about the establishment’s history and get to sample its ensaymadas.

From there, the gastronomic experience continues with a visit to the local market.

Experience Nasugbu’s kakanin culture

Kakanin Culture is alive in Nasugbu

One of the highlights is visiting the row of kakanin stalls.

Here, you get to see the variety of traditional Filipino rice cakes and delicacies available in the local market. For food enthusiasts, this is a chance to sample familiar favourites while learning about the food culture of Nasugbu. You can get to experience the traditional way of grating coconuts also.

Meet Lola Otelia and experience Pancit Balita

85 year old Lola Otelia is still doing the quality testing and tasting of their decades-old Pancit Balita

Perhaps the most memorable part of the Nasugbu gastronomic tour is meeting 85-year-old Lola Otelia, who started the Pancit Balita business.

Listening to her story gives you a personal connection to the dish and the family enterprise behind it.

Her experience is a reminder that local cuisine is often built around people who dedicate their lives to preparing and sharing food with their communities.

Nasugbu’s famous St. Francis Xavier Parish Church

Nasugbu offers a refreshing alternative to the usual beach itinerary. Come for the coastal attractions, but make time for its public market and gastronomic experiences, too.

8. Tuy: Discover Local Flavours and Handmade Paper Craftsmanship

The final destination of the Batangas First Congressional District Food and Heritage Circuit is Tuy (pronounced: Tu-Wee).

The Tuy Gastronomy Experiential Tour begins with a hearty serving of Kalderetang Kambing at Kusina ni Mercy.

A well-loved Filipino goat meat dish, kaldereta is known for its rich and savoury flavours. It is a satisfying introduction to another side of Batangas cuisine.

But Tuy has another experience waiting.

Try handmade paper-making at Tuy Art Hub Gallery

At Tuy Art Hub Gallery, you get to appreciate local creativity and try handmade paper-making.

It is an interesting departure from the food experiences of the previous destinations and adds another dimension to the circuit’s cultural offerings.
