Taal Heritage Village, often referred to simply as “Taal,” is a beautifully preserved town that echoes the grandeur of the Spanish colonial era. This charming destination is a testament to the resilience of the Filipino people and their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage.
Taal, a town known for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, invites you to step back in time. If you like streets with old-house vibes, this is the best place to be. Imagine the famous Calle Crisologo of Vigan City but on a larger and grander scale. The tight labyrinth and town grid are dotted with even more historical Spanish Colonial Architecture. The majority of the accommodations and major establishments have maintained the original external design and structure, which altogether creates this massive and immersive historical walk experience you can ever have in the region, or in the country.
Historical Significance
The roots of Taal can be traced back to the early Spanish colonial period, making it one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. It has witnessed centuries of history, including the climactic eruption of the infamous active Taal Volcano, the country’s struggle for independence, and its eventual sovereignty. Today, Taal stands as a living and breathing sprawling open-air museum, allowing visitors to meander through its streets and experience history, culture, food, and heritage firsthand.
Architectural Wonders and Feats
One of the highlights of the Taal Heritage Village Culture Tour is its stunning colonial-era architecture ubiquitous in its central downtown area. The town is now renowned for its well-preserved ancestral houses, which showcase a blend of architectural styles, including Spanish, Bahay na Bato (stone houses), and Filipino colonial. The intricate wooden carvings, capiz shell windows, and imposing stone facades are a testament to the craftsmanship of the era and locals love of preserving such feats of craftsmanship.
The Walking Heritage Tour
As you saunter through the tight grid, you will encounter a number of ancestral homes that have been converted into museums, allowing you to explore their interiors and discover the stories behind these architectural marvels. Some notable houses to visit include the Gregorio Agoncillo Mansion, the Villavicencio Wedding Gift House, and the Galleria Taal, which houses a vast collection of vintage photographs.
We are able to visit the Casa Recuerdos. Being one of the superfluous numbers of picturesque houses, this particular structure is now converted into a photo studio. Entering its gates, you would be welcomed by two charming antique cars at their parking bay. Grace its halls through the concrete staircase and its spacious balcony. The Interiors are illuminated by many intricately designed chandeliers. Altogether, they exude a romantic warm glow that could be reminiscent during those years. The large room is converted to the photo studio complete with lighting paraphernalia and hordes of traditional Filipiniana dresses that you can don and have photoshoots with.
Right in front of Casa Recuerdos is the Paradores del Castillo. It is one of the iconic bed & breakfasts in Taal Heritage town and one of its significant amenities is their infinity pool. Its Reception Hall features an open-air space with a picturesque woodcarving installation, antique displays, and classic furniture that completes the theme.
It was a brief walking tour and we did have not enough time to truly immerse ourselves around. This makes me want to be back and explore more of Taal town.
Cultural Immersion
The Taal Heritage Village Culture Tour goes beyond architecture; it provides a comprehensive cultural experience and historical feel. You can have the opportunity to engage with locals who are passionate about sharing their traditions and learn firsthand from the people who believe in them. Marvel the streets that truly kept the memories of the centuries intact, and you could truly imagine how things ran during those days. I could imagine horse-drawn carriages clacking on the streets and maidens in traditional Filipiniana attire roaming streets as they went about with their daily errands.
