Project Director, Ley Almeda and Regional Head Bernard Lee during media interview

Established in Manila in 2017, Big Bad Wolf Books has expanded its reach to 17 countries, with a mission to promote literacy beyond just the English language. The organization achieved its ambitious goal of cultivating 1 million new readers in 2024, reflecting a significant growth in readership across various nations.

Project Director Ley Almeda, who has roots in Pampanga, highlighted the organization’s efforts to reach more readers by organizing events in cities like Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod in 2023, and General Santos City in 2024. These initiatives have played a crucial role in increasing readership and making books more accessible to diverse communities.

Regional Head Bernard Lee from Malaysia emphasized the organization’s commitment to curating a wide array of books, including those about pets, based on community feedback. He also noted that studies indicate reading print materials results in six times more retention compared to digital copies, underscoring the enduring value of physical books.

Almeda expressed surprise at the popularity of history books among Gen Z readers, indicating a growing interest in understanding the past. She believes that Big Bad Wolf Books’ success is measured by its ability to ensure everyone has access to books, stating, “When everyone has a book.” She further emphasized that the organization’s focus is on promoting literacy in general, providing platforms for local authors, publishers, and writers worldwide.

Both Almeda and Lee highlighted the personal value of gifting books, considering them a good investment that can be passed around and cherished over time. They also noted that pediatricians recommend introducing children to physical books, especially those with interactive features like pop-ups and textures, to counteract the effects of excessive digital exposure during the pandemic.

To encourage reading, Almeda challenged readers to bring a non-reader to the event, hoping that they would pick up at least one book. Additionally, for the first time in Clark, Big Bad Wolf Books is offering vouchers: a Php200 voucher for purchases worth Php2,000, Php300 for Php3,000, and Php500 for Php5,000, providing customers with more value for their money.

Almeda concluded by urging the community to support the event, stating, “Help us make this successful; you help us bring affordable books to smaller cities.” The upcoming sale in Clark not only offers an extensive selection of books but also reinforces Big Bad Wolf Books’ dedication to fostering a global reading culture and making literature accessible to all.
