In celebration of Bulan ning Amanung Sisuan, the Nepo Center, in collaboration with the AGKAS (Aguman Kalalangan Sulat Kapampangan) group, proudly launched the advocacy program “Kabiasnan Kapampangan,” a series of cultural events dedicated to preserving and promoting the Kapampangan language and heritage. The August 16-18 segment, aptly titled Kalalangan, showcased the art of Kulitan, the indigenous Kapampangan script, through a comprehensive workshop and exhibit that drew enthusiasts and curious minds alike.
WORKSHOP WITH A HEART
Over the course of three days, the Kalalangan segment offered participants a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of Kapampangan calligraphy. Day 1 featured a Basic Kulitan Workshop, where around 30 participants learned the fundamentals of the ancient script. Included in the learning session are the critical rules applied in writing and reading the Kulitan characters.
The excitement continued on Day 2 with a Brush Calligraphy lesson, allowing participants to further refine their skills. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the JDN Realty group, all materials, including inks, brushes, and papers, were provided free of charge. The difference is the medium used for this learning session. Preceding lessons is the traditional use of ballpoint pens and pencils while using dedicated brushes for calligraphy involves a different dexterity and manual finesse to achieve clean and disciplined strokes.
FREE CALLIGRAPHY SERVICES AND EXHIBIT
The culmination of Kalalangan on Day 3 was a grand exhibit that not only displayed the works of the participants but also offered free calligraphy services to mall-goers. The response was overwhelming, with 263 visitors participating in the calligraphy session, a testament to the growing interest in Kapampangan culture and arts. Sir Norman Tiotuico, a key figure in the event, expressed his delight at the turnout and the enthusiasm of the participants.
