ANTIQUE PROVINCE: Travel Guide

It is a rising tourism rockstar more than an emerging one, the province of Antique bears the finest beach, sharp mountain peaks, crystal clear rivers, and a total landscape and seascape that would certainly captivate you. Living their branding, “where the mountains meet the sea”, this simple phrase speaks to the vastness of its own tourism universe thriving with a rich and abundant ecosystem. The towering mountain ranges that soak the sky’s moisture and squeeze them into the meandering brooks and streams feeding the rainforest and livelihood of the locals set as the formidable hinterland fortress of the province. Its nomenclature comes from the word hamtic, a kinaray-a teem meaning black ants – it is a complete irony or could be blasphemous on the province’s enormity and a vast swathe of lands and seascapes awaiting guests to bask in its naturally sparkling glory. From rocky coasts to fine white sand island beaches plus the untouched rainforests that hold a biodiversity hotspot from its peaks down deep to its seafloor, the fauna is indeed bountiful. Regardless, Antique province is proven rich in natural resources.

WHAT YOU NEED AND WANT, ANTIQUE HAS IT

Having to visit and explore the province for two days, I realized, even a week’s worth of excursion would never be enough. The province proves its silent royalty status in terms of tourism powerhouse-ship. Whatever you may request or need, they have it. Wishing for a mountain adventure? They have hundreds to thousands of trails. They have lots of beaches, from the mainland up to its bespoke islands, nearby and far-flung. They have a strong community of Loom Weavers producing rare fabrics. Antique has river adventure experiences. Modern conveniences such as boutique hotels in its capital town. Let me bring you on a virtual journey with this story. Find a good spot and let’s sail away through your imagination.

BEYOND ITS FORTRESS

Coming from the wacky Kalibo Ati Atihan Festival experience, we now enter the realms of the Antique province. From the loud banging of music and festivities to the serenity and peaceful countryside, the province is a perfect spot to recharge thou art social battery. The morning sun alternately piercing through the fast-moving gray clouds kept an aura of brisk energy as we traversed the scenic paved highway. It was almost void of traffic hassle except in the downtown area as expected.

The Panay Mountain Ranges still shrouded with thick mist like a shy maiden welcomed our eastern view while the blue and azure seas splatter the coastline on our western view. This is the view that is indeed soothing to the heart, mind, soul, and spirit – for hours, this is your view.

BACKYARD INDUSTRY OF WOOD AND METAL

We found a roadside store with a display of pottery, wide-brim hats, fans, woven products, and these, the wood handle blades and knives. We alighted from our coaster bus and got a chance to meet a metalsmith – Kuya Nonoy. We call it “panday” in vernacular, and for 25 years, he mastered the art of it. Sir Nonoy gave us a peek at how he skillfully shaped the malleable sweltering metal. Embers whimsically prancing away from the heat sources offered a brief light show and sooner found him striking briskly the orange glowing metal inside his own open-air workshop. He has to do this many times to achieve the form and shape. This such backyard industries should be supported. I felt happy when he shared stories of customers going back for personalized requests and having it shipped to them and would pay him appropriately. Each wood handle and blade are made with tedious labor. Most importantly, the money you pay them goes straight to their dining table and provision for the school fees of their young generation.

A QUICK “PININDANG” TRIP IN CULASI

The town made famous by the ensnaring Mararison Island, the northern town of Culasi also offers a unique dining experience. Try their “pinindang”, a dried seafood delicacy made from tiny fishes shaped into pancake-shaped patties. Flash frying for few seconds of this divine salty goodness into a heavenly wonderland of umami flavors. It is a pity I did not bring home some. We spent a few moments at the boardwalk with the Mararison Island at its full glory dominating the horizon and my mind kept shouting repeatedly “So near yet so far”. Before we left, an emergency scenario was unveiled when a community assisted the transfer of a mother in labor pains from the island to be fetched by the waiting ambulance. Momentarily, the sirens blared and the patient-mother was whisked away safely to the nearest healthcare facility.

TIBIAO’S PILLAR OF BAKED BRANDS AND ECOTOURISM PARK

Bearing the town’s namesake, the Tibiao chain of bakeries is famous for its “pan de regla” or Catalugan, made iconic with its reddish core, ensaymada, and ube most of its products. We are given an opportunity to visit its main branch where its baking stalwart began. Their famous siopao and uniquely named bread Teren-Teren are the must-try too.

Tigbaboy Hanging Bridge is part of the Tibiao Ecotourism Park. It is accessible with a quick walk from the main road until you reach the shores and the bluish structure unveils with its lofty towers and the suspended main span above the mighty roaring river. Mediocre for the locals who pass through every day, but a nice quick visit by visitors to marvel at such human architecture amidst mother nature’s grandeur.

Calawag Mountain Resort is less than an hour’s drive from the main highway through a paved winding road traversing the foothills of the Panay Mountain Ranges. It is a few meters away from the defunct Kayak Inn where the birthplace of the Kawa Hot Bath began in the Philippines. The history of the Muscovado Sugar industry led to the reusing of large “kawa” as a unique warm bath with low and gentle fire underneath. The Calawag Mountain Resort features a complex of different experiences you can enjoy, from river tubing to spa experiences like massage and coffee scrub, a fish spa, and dining options. A must-try is their Coffee which is locally sourced from Antique Coffee Farms. The entire mountain resort complex features architecture dominated by bamboo and wooden details that effectively complement with the surrounding natural scenery. If not for any noisy guests, the rustling of leaves and the sound of the gushing river would eternally serenade you for 24 hours.

WITNESS BUGASONG’S COMMUNITY OF HANDLOOM WEAVERS

Amongst all the weaving communities I visited to date, the Bagtason Loom Weavers’ Association (BLWA) has the most dense hand looms I have ever witnessed. The waning tradition of loom weaving has led a returning local from Manila, Mr. Mario Manzano, to revive the practice. Being from a family of handloom weavers, he developed the innate desire to keep the heritage craftsmanship beating alive. With support from the government, the Bagtason Loom Weavers’ Association was formed and now has more than 70 members. They are housed in a two-story processing building which was turned over last December of 2020. The BLWA produces colorful and unique fabrics used for “patadyong” or skirts, shirts, scarves, and many more uses. At their very building, they have an array of items made of their fabric. We are blessed to be gifted one shirt of choice by the Tourism Promotions Board. There are more hand looms on the second floor. The building also features an inventory room where they keep processed threads. I am amazed at how they process using natural dyes, turning these threads into aesthetically designed handmade fabrics. Through these intricately woven textiles labored with passion, the Bagtason Loom Weaver’s Association not only showcases the beauty of the Antique’s heritage craft but also sustains a legacy of craftsmanship that transcends provincial borders and generations.

PATNONGON’S ROADSIDE CHURCH RUINS

The Church and Convent Ruins of Patnongon are located just beside the National Road dominating a corner. It was the year 1860 when Manuel Asensio led the construction and ultimately finished year 1895. It houses now a Catholic Primary school. What is striking about the ruins is the intact Bell Tower that defines the town’s skyline. It is about four stories tall and signs of decay and overturning of nature. The exterior walls bear the signs of wear and tear yet exude a striking and dramatic aura that seems to tell the story of the centuries.

STEP IN THE LAST SPANISH ANCESTRAL HOME IN ANTIQUE

Casa Azurin is the last Spanish-style stone house in the province of Antique located in the capital town of San Jose de Buenavista. It was saved from the fire razing during the World War years and now stands as one of the prominent structures in Antique and declared a Heritage House pursuant to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines with Board Resolution No. 7 of 2020. It is known as the Bahay na Bato and features a concrete ground level with some of the antique tiles still intact while the Upper Floor features an all-wood level. It is operated now as a museum with art masterpieces on display. One dramatic feature that I love is the wooden stairs that lead directly to the upper windows. Additionally, the exterior exudes many intricate details, especially at the wooden deck. A Restoration Marker indicates that the structure is an important cultural property and is funded by the National Government through the efforts of Deputy Speaker Loren B. Legarda. The Bahay na Bato is about 10-15 minutes walk from the Capitol Grounds.

THE WHIMSICAL HISTORY OF SAN PEDRO RUINS

The religious complex marries the past and present structures of the San Pedro Parish. One must first understand the reason of the structure’s downfall. According to oral translations, the church’s original cogon roof was accidentally burnt by a pet monkey. Not even a fierce warfare or natural calamity took it down, regardless of what, the stony remnants of a once-grand church evoke a sense of nostalgia and mystery. Enter its old-world charm realm and marvel at the pocket garden setup. Wander around and observe how Mother Nature took over the centuries-old crumbling rock walls. It was during 1998 when attention to the ruins was only given, and combined efforts of the parochial leaders and laypeople led to the clearing and ornamentation of the old church ruins.

CAPITOL GROUNDS BEARING HISTORICAL NARRATIVES

Visiting a province would not be complete without setting at its capitol grounds. Where the seat of the provincial government is at, and most often bears historical significance. At the Antique Capitol Grounds, it is hard not to notice the public stage with a “salakot” designed roof, hailed from the narrative of the Golden Salakot from the 10 Bornean Datus. Also, the bust of the Evelio Javier, one of the important political from the province during the First Marcos Regime. Also, inside the New Capitol Building is a huge painting entitled as “Ang Bulawan Nga Saduk” by the reknowned artist Elizalde Navarro in the year 1982.

HOW ABOUT SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH TEN 15-FOOT-HIGH STATUES?

A profound symbol of cultural heritage and resilience is the statues of the Ten Bornean Datus located at the Malandog Esplanade of Hamtic Town. Revered as a testament to the rich history of Panay Island, this imposing 10-piece gigantic monument, about 15 feet each in height, pays homage through evocative storytelling to the legendary migration of ten noble chieftains from Borneo to Panay Island in the 13th century. Cast in bronze and sculpted with meticulous detail, the five-ton statues immortalize the pivotal moment when these gallant leaders, led by Datu Puti, forged engagement with the indigenous Ati tribe, laying the foundation for what would become the vibrant fabric of Filipino culture.

ANINI-Y’S UNIQUE HOTSPRING RESORT

The Sira-an Hotspring Resort, located along the southwestern coast of Antique Province in the Philippines, offers guests a serene escape into nature’s embrace. Renowned for its therapeutic thermal springs, the resort invites its valued guests to immerse themselves in mineral-rich waters known for their healing properties, promising relaxation and rejuvenation. FIND ONE OF THE BEAUTIFUL BAROQUE CHURCHES IN ANTIQUE

Standing proudly in the heart of Anini-y town in Antique Province, Philippines, the Anini-y Church, formally known as the St. John Nepomucene Baroque Church, serves as a remarkable statement of both the town’s deep religious heritage and colonial influences. This architectural marvel showcases a harmonious blend of Baroque and Neoclassical influences, characterized by its imposing façade adorned with intricate carvings and embellishments. Its sturdy stone walls, fortified against the ravages of time and natural disasters, stand as a symbol of resilience and faith, while its majestic bell tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. One must pay attention to the other side of the church to marvel at its construction past. On the left side facing the church, there is a part of the wall that is unplastered and reveals a lot of coral rocks as the main materials for the thick walls.

This enchanting tropical island paradise, accessible by approximately 15-minute boat from the mainland, offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Visitors to Nogas Island can indulge in a variety of activities, from snorkeling and swimming in the azure waters to picnicking on the shores or simply basking in the sun’s warm embrace. A lighthouse stands as a safety beacon for seafarers and a photo backdrop for tourists.

MARVEL AT MODERN RELIGIOUS ARCHITECTURE

The Sta. Monica Church features a twin tower featuring modern-style architecture that has multiple arches from its doors and windows. It is clad in a white facade hence blazes against the day sun.

REVERE THE FIRST PROVINCIAL GOVERNOR

Right beside the Sta. Monica Church is the official bust of the Gen. Leandro Locsin Fullon bearing the First Governor riding valiantly on a horse. The late governor’s remains also lie in this very spot. The park features a moderately sized open space with surrounding greeneries. It is recommended to have a quick stop here while in the province to honor the primordial provincial executive.

UNVEIL SAN REMIGIO’S HIDDEN RICE TERRACES

The Gen. Fullon Rice Terraces is one of the amazing discoveries of this decade about Antique Province. Featuring sprawling rice paddies across the southern portions of the Panay mountain range, this is a destination one must encounter. The long arduous hike is worth it once you reach the vantage points. Best to visit when the rice terraces are in its full greenest glory.

UNUSUAL DESTINATIONS

Tourism experience can be as unique and eccentric as it can be. While in Antique, it is recommended to visit their unique cemeteries. Yes, you read it right – Cemeteries. Before cringing, you must know the essence of these spots. There are three cemeteries you can visit and understand their uniqueness and their important participation in the tourism landscape of Antique.

The first is in Hamtic where a cemetery-inside-church-inside-a-cemetery is located. The church structure features the original stone walls that bear the stories of decades of funerals.

Another is the stone-arch bearing the Kinaray-a phrase “Kami Karon, Kamo Dason” which translates to “Us Today, You Next”. Creepy isn’t it? But that very message reminds us of the very reality of life.

Last in this category is the cemetery with an inscription at its entrance arch “Mabanhaw” which translates to “we will rise again”. Jokingly, you can say, “Could this be the center of zombie land?”

As you delve deeper into Antique’s tourism treasures, it becomes more evident that this province is not just a destination per se, but a journey of discovery, where every spot reveals a narrative and a new facet of its beauty and charm. This article still is limited to the writer’s experience, hence, there are far more destinations in the province such as waterfalls, river adventures, beach resorts, boutique hotels, mountain climbing, cultural experiences and much more. Truly, Antique Province would leave an indelible mark on the hearts of all who venture to its realm, beckoning them to return time and time again to experience its bespoke magic.
