NICE TO KNOW: A quick mythical story about the legendary Mooncake Festival

Legend has it that long ago, during a time of political unrest in ancient China, the Earth was plagued by ten suns that scorched the land and threatened to bring destruction. The people suffered greatly, and a hero named Hou Yi, known for his exceptional archery skills, emerged to save the day. With his incredible marksmanship, he climbed Kunlun Mountain and shot down nine of the ten suns, leaving just one to provide light and warmth to the world.

Hou Yi’s extraordinary feat made him a national hero, but it also drew the envy and jealousy of some. He was granted the Elixir of Immortality as a reward for his service but chose not to consume it immediately. Instead, he wished to live a long life with his beloved wife, Chang’e. However, the Elixir attracted the covetous eyes of many, including Fengxian, a power-hungry and corrupt emperor.

One fateful day, while Hou Yi was away, Fengxian sent his henchmen to steal the Elixir of Immortality. Faced with the prospect of losing the elixir, Chang’e made a quick decision. She swallowed the elixir herself, granting her immortality but also causing her to float up to the moon, where she took residence in the Moon Palace.

Hou Yi was devastated by the loss of his wife and spent his days gazing at the moon, where he believed Chang’e was living. To honor her memory, he began a tradition of making and sharing mooncakes, which symbolized the full moon, reunion, and togetherness. People also placed offerings on their rooftops and prayed to the moon goddess for blessings, safety, and good fortune during the Mooncake Festival.

As for the Archer and the Jade Bunny, it is said that Chang’e was accompanied on the moon by a loyal companion, a jade rabbit who pounded herbs to create the Elixir of Immortality. This jade rabbit is often depicted on the mooncakes enjoyed during the festival.

The legend of the Archer and the Jade Bunny continues to be a central part of the Mooncake Festival, reminding people of the values of heroism, sacrifice, love, and the importance of family reunion. Today, the festival is celebrated with colorful lanterns, dragon and lion dances, and, of course, the sharing of delicious mooncakes among friends and family, all while basking in the soft glow of the full moon, just as Hou Yi did in his eternal love for Chang’e.
